One of the most important properties of quinoa is the high protein content: the important vitamins B and E. No one would believe that these little grains contain such a large amount of both protein and all essential amino acids, which the human body needs so much.
Quinoa was cultivated for the first time in the Andes - Peru, Chile and Bolivia some 5000 years ago. Later on, in an attempt to destroy and control the South American Indians, the Spanish conquerors banned the cultivation of quinoa and even threatened with death anyone who tried to cultivate it. The conquerors offered wheat as a substitute to quinoa but anyway failed to replace it in full.
